Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I clean my topper?
For our perspex/acrylic topper: They are a little fragile so give them a gentle wipe over with a damp cloth and store them flat. MDF doesn't like getting too damp so don't dunk it in a sink full of dish water, just a wipe over is fine. Mirror Perspex/acrylic can scratch easily, so no scrubbing brushes over them. Our printed toppers are happy with a light wipe over also.
  • How do I put the topper on my cake?
If you have a dense cake it is a good idea to make a hole with a skewer first then insert the topper, otherwise you can hold the topper by the spike and carefully push it into the cake. Make sure it's nice and straight so it doesn't look like you've had a cheeky wine or two before the guests arrive. Unfortunately we do not offer refunds for toppers that are broken whilst being inserted into the cake. Please be careful with your topper to avoid any breakage.
  • Do you make custom toppers?
We make more custom toppers than anything else. If you have something in mind like an "in joke" that only the family or closest friends know about or, a nickname or pet name that you refer to them as then we can make it up for you. Just send an email and we will see what we can come up with.
  • What size will the topper be?
All toppers are designed for a 6" cake. We can make it bigger just email us at heartpoppingdesigns@gmail.com
  • I saw one of your toppers on social media but cannot find it on your website, how can I order?
That's OK, we probably posted a pic of a client's gorgeous cake with a custom topper and it's perfect for your cake. It must be exactly the same only with a different name and maybe change the colour otherwise, it's perfect! No problem send us a pic of the one you saw and we'll make it.
  • My topper arrived damaged, what can I do?

  • Product Care Guide
We do not offer a warranty on any of our product range so we encourage Heart Popping Designs customers to read all product care information as below and on the individual product descriptions prior to purchasing. It is your responsibility to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the long life and quality of your product. GENERAL PRODUCT CARE Our products are not made for little fingers so should not be handled by children. Do not hang any items above or within reach of a cot or bed. Our products are shipped braced on 3mm wood and packed safely in a cello bag to ensure it reaches you in one piece. We recommend storing your cake toppers, wall names etc in this packaging when they're not in use to keep them safe. MDF MDF is a favoured material in a variety of industries for its sustainability, durability and strength. However, as it is natural material each piece can vary. The variances in grain and colour (and therefore from time to time our machined etch) is completely natural and normal, and should not be considered a fault. As with any wood, keep your MDF product away from water and moisture to avoid damage. When watering your indoor plants and herb garden etc, we recommend removing your planter sticks before watering. Handle your MDF product - whether it be a wall name or cake topper - from the thickest/widest point, distributing weight evenly across the piece when mounting onto the wall, or sticking into a cake etc. COLOUR, GLITTER AND MIRROR ACRYLICS We source only the highest quality of a range of acrylics from in New Zealand, Australia and China. Due to the delicate nature of our products, each piece should be handled with great care. Handle your acrylic product - whether it be a wall name or cake topper - from the thickest/widest point, distributing weight evenly across the piece when mounting onto the wall, or sticking into a cake etc. Be mindful not to drop or bend your acrylic piece as it is not likely to survive if dropped or mishandled. Most of our acrylic range has a tendency to show finger marks and dust; a gentle wipe with a microfibre cloth will have them looking as good as new. CAKE TOPPERS If cared for properly your cake topper will last for you for many birthdays to come. They are fragile by design and should be handled as little as possible. When the time comes to use your topper, handle at the thickest/widest part of the design, or by the stake. Apply pressure as evenly as possible when popping into the cake. We recommend handling our tiny toppers where the stake meets the name/word. These guys are most fragile; they're called the tiny topper after all. Take care not to drop or bend your topper as it's not likely to survive! Cake topper stakes can be wiped clean with a damp cloth after use. Leave to air dry completely before storing in original packaging.
  • Wall Mounting Guide
Before mounting your beautiful Product, we recommend you have a read of our Product Care Guide. We do not offer a warranty on any of our product. It is your responsibility to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the long life and quality of your product. If looked after properly, your pieces will last for many years to come. BEFORE MOUNTING YOUR PRODUCT Firstly, it is important to note our products are not made for little fingers so should not be handled by children. As much as they want to help, any bend or or drop is very likely to break your treasured piece. Do not hang any Heart Popping Designs item above or within reach of a cot or bed. ADHESIVES We recommend that our range of personalised wall names/lettering are mounted to walls or doors using either Blue Tack, or 3M Command picture hanging strips (they look/work a little like velcro) cut down to smaller pieces. 3M products can be found at Mitre 10, The Warehouse etc. Blue Tack is a great option if you think you're likely to move the piece around at any point, whereas whilst the 3M range can be taken down easily enough, it's not as easy to move the adhesives off the wall. Keep in mind that Blue Tack can have a 'melting' effect in really warm climates - you don't want to come home to find your piece has slipped all the way down the wall! We wouldn't recommend using Blue Tack if you're mounting above a radiator or heater. MOUNTING YOUR WALL DECOR Put your adhesives on as evenly as you can on widest points of the product. Handle your wall name or lettering at the thickest/widest point of the design and press gently, distributing weight evenly across the piece. If using 3M, read the instructions on the product packaging alongside our mounting guide. If you're using Blue Tack, we've found that giving your piece a little wiggle as you push it onto the wall/door helps to spread the Blue Tack and really adhere it well. REMOVING YOUR WALL DECOR When the time comes to remove your wall name or lettering, follow the same handling instructions as when mounting: distribute weight evenly across the piece as much as you can, handling at the widest points (note - this may not necessarily be each end). Blue Tack: we find using the same gentle 'wiggle' technique as mentioned above works great and loosens the piece slowly and gently. To remove any Blue Tack left on your wall, roll your finger backwards and forwards over it. 3M: follow the removal instructions on the product packaging.

  • Cookie Stamps and Cutters
What's a Popping Stamp? Our Popping Stamps leave a raised design as apposed to the traditional imprinted/embossed cookie stamps. The raised design can be left plain or painted to create a different effect. Handy Hints Make sure your fondant is thick enough at least 3mm. Make sure you put enough pressure on the stamp to ensure a nicely raised design. Use corn flour on the stamp to prevent sticking. We recommend that you HAND WASH your Popping Stamps and dry thoroughly. *Stamps is suitable for cookies between 7 and 8cm in diameter. 3D Printed Product Care Always hand wash the cookie cutter with soap and warm water. Do not soak in water. Cookie cutters are not dishwasher safe. Store in a cool dry place with nothing heavier than other light cookie cutters on top. Cookie cutters made with 3D printed plastic have a low melting point and should be kept away from heat sources, such as direct sunlight, hot foods, stove tops, inside ovens, on hot pans, etc. Contact with heat and/or pressure may cause cutters to warp or melt. Sizes Our cookie cutters are sized based off of their width and height (or height and width). The pictures above are oriented to match the height and width (or width and height) of the measurements given. Cutting Depth The cutting depth is referring to how thick your dough, cake, brownie, etc. can be for the cutter to cut through. The average cookie dough is usually rolled out to a .5" thickness, so our .5" cutting depth will cut it just fine. Material Used All of our cookie cutters are 3D printed with PLA plastic. PLA plastic is derived from corn starch. Keep in mind that our plastic cookie cutters have slightly thicker walls to give it more durability so your cookie cutter will last through years of use, but they may not give as clean a cut as a metal cookie cutter. Whereas metal cookie cutters may start to rust or bend from constant use, our cookie cutters will not rust and will keep their shape with proper care.
  • Basic Vanilla Cookie Recipe
These sugar cookies are easy to make and bake. To top if off they are scrumptious and can be decorated using royal icing, fondant or just eaten as they come out of the oven! INGREDIENTS 200g unsalted soft butter 200g caster sugar 1 egg lightly beaten 400g Plain Flour or Gluten Free Health Flour Fondant – for decorating Optional Flavours Vanilla Cookies: Add seeds from 1 vanilla pod Lemon Cookies: Add finely grated zest of lemon Orange Cookies: Add finely grated zest of orange Chocolate Cookies: Replace 50g of the plain flour with 50g of cocoa powder METHOD With paddle attachment of electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar and chosen flavouring until well mixed and just creamy in the texture. Do not overwork, or the cookies will spread during baking. Beat in the egg until well combined. Add the flour and mix on low speed until dough forms. Gather into ball, wrap in cling film and chill for at least 1 hour. Place the dough on floured surface and knead briefly. Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes and using a palette knife, lay on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Chill again for about 30 minutes, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Bake for 8-12 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown at the edges. Let cool on wire rack. Allow cooling and decorate with fondant HINTS Ensure that you chill the dough sufficiently prior to baking. This reduces the chance that the cookies will "spread" while baking.
